Eduardo Vargas’ goal for Chile against Bolivia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers topped the talk of the fans on social media as it embodied the “lack of sportsmanship”.
The Bolivian defender passed the ball to his goalkeeper Carlos Lampe, but the latter suddenly fell to the ground and indicated his injury, and at the same moment Vargas snatched the ball and put it in the net.
Vargas’s behavior caused great anger on the pitch, as the Bolivian players attacked him and considered what he did to be far from sportsmanship ethics, considering that he did not try to cut the ball from the goalkeeper, as it was Flamen who fell without contact and was injured.
What confirms that Lampe was not acting is that he left the match after that due to his injury.
Vargas’ goal was the equalizer for Chile, but it did not benefit his country much after Miguel Triqueros scored another goal for Bolivia and his team won 2-1.
Chile’s points in the qualifiers froze at 5 points in the penultimate place, while Bolivia reached eighth place with 8 points, only two points behind the places qualifying for the World Cup.
