The Talk Sports network revealed that Xabi Alonso is not the preferred choice among Liverpool players to succeed Jurgen Klopp in the technical leadership of the English club.
Klopp had announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of this year, and the current Bayer Leverkusen coach is at the forefront of the options to succeed the German, as is Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbe.
But according to the latest report, the name the players favor inside the Reds locker room is not Alonso or De Zerbe, but rather Klopp’s current assistant, Pep Lijnders.
Lijnders is scheduled to leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, and plans to work as an independent technical director after years he spent as an assistant to the German coach.
The position of the Liverpool management, led by Michael Edwards, remains unknown regarding the possibility of keeping Lijnders, especially since all reports confirm that Xabi Alonso remains the Reds’ first choice at the present moment.
It is noteworthy that contracting with Alonso will not be easy, as Bild newspaper said that the Spaniard would prefer, if he left Leverkusen, to go to Bayern Munich, which is currently doing its best to convince him to lead them.
