Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo could face disciplinary action from the Football Association after removing his shirt to reveal a religious message during his team’s win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Gakpo is known to be a devout Christian and frequently posts religious messages on his social media accounts.
The Dutch international fired a shot past Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in the 34th minute and then took off his shirt in celebration, revealing a t-shirt bearing the message “I belong to Christ.”
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) rules, which the FA follows, prohibit any celebration or shirts containing “any political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images.”
IFAB adds: “The player and/or team will be sanctioned by the competition organizer, the national football association, or FIFA.”
The FA is expected to announce a sanction, likely a relatively large fine, for Gakpo.
