Liverpool’s setbacks continue… Newcastle wins the Carabao Cup

Liverpool’s woes have intensified in recent days, after they failed to win the 2025 Carabao Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in the final.

Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties at Anfield last week.

The Reds produced one of their worst performances of the season, offering little threat except for a single save from substitute Curtis Jones, which saw goalkeeper Nick Pope shine.

Newcastle took the lead in the final minute of the first half thanks to a Dan Bronn header, before Alexander Isak killed off Arne Slot’s hopes with a second goal in the 52nd minute. Federico Chiesa pulled one back in the 95th minute.

It was perhaps a historic night for Newcastle by any measure. This was the Magpies’ first title since 1955, and their first Carabao Cup title ever, having lost two previous finals.

Eddie Howe became the first English manager to win a domestic trophy since Harry Redknapp won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.

Liverpool, on the other hand, failed to win their eleventh Carabao Cup title, losing in the final for the fifth time in their history.
