Lyon president John Textor has launched a scathing attack on Paris Saint-Germain, considering that his club is competing with a state rather than a club like any other in the world.
“I don’t think we’re competing with a club,” Textor told Brazilian newspaper Globo. “The competition with Paris Saint-Germain is a competition with a state, we’re competing with Qatar inside France.”
He added, “Honestly, I hope we kick PSG’s ass next season.”
In response to these statements, Paris Saint-Germain issued an official statement accusing Lyon’s president of disrespect and a lack of understanding of the nature of football.
“We will not stoop to this level to respond to such ridiculous comments, which are not only wrong but also inappropriate and disrespectful to French football as a whole, not just Paris Saint-Germain,” PSG wrote in its statement.
“A small number of clubs dominate football, as was the case with Lyon from 2001 to 2008. If Lyon’s president continues to make such comments, he will be added to our cases in Brazil and France,” the statement concluded.
It is worth noting that Lyon won the French league 7 times in a row from 2001 to 2008. Since the Qatari takeover of Paris Saint-Germain in 2010, the capital club has won the title in all but three years.
