Manchester United owner admits ‘unforgivable mistake’

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has insisted that the decision to keep Erik ten Hag in charge of the Red Devils after last season was a ‘very wrong decision’.

Ten Hag led United to the FA Cup but their Premier League form was never convincing and all signs pointed to him leaving.

However, United decided to renew their faith in Ten Hag after Ratcliffe acquired a large stake in the club, before the Dutchman was sacked two months into the new season.

Ratcliffe spoke about the reason for keeping Ten Hag on, saying: “It was too early for us to make a big decision like changing the manager.”

He added: “There was confusion, was the irregular performance due to Ten Hag or was it related to the system as a whole? We didn’t reach an answer and that’s why we decided to give him another chance.”

He concluded: “It was the wrong decision, I regret it.”

In November, Ruben Amorim was appointed United manager to replace Ten Hag, and although results remain extremely inconsistent, Ratcliffe has confirmed his absolute confidence in the Portuguese.
