A war of words erupted between Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana and Lyon star Nemanja Matic ahead of their highly anticipated Europa League quarter-final clash.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper sparked the crisis when he said Manchester United were a much better team than Lyon and there was no need to worry about the match.
Matic responded to Onana’s remarks in a press conference, “When you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you have to be careful what you say.”
He added, “If another goalkeeper like Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel, or David de Gea said those words, then fine, but Onana? He’s one of the worst in the club’s history.”
The war didn’t end there, as Onana tweeted his own Twitter account, defending his comments and attacking Matic.
The Cameroonian wrote, “I would never insult any other club. We know tomorrow’s match will be difficult against a strong opponent. We are focused on putting in a performance that will please our fans.”
He concluded, alluding to Matic, “At least I won titles with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
It’s worth noting that the Serbian international previously wore the Manchester United shirt from 2017 to 2022, but did not win any titles with the Red Devils. Onana, on the other hand, won the FA Cup last season.
