Mats Hummels to retire at the end of the season

Roma star Mats Hummels has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the current season, after less than a year at the Italian club.

The 36-year-old failed to fully integrate with Roma, and as his age advanced, he preferred to end his career rather than embark on a new experience.

“I will miss football terribly,” Hummels said in an official statement.

He added, “I have seen many players and many coaches, to whom I owe a lot. Without them, my entire career would not have taken off or reached this level.”

Hummels began his football career with Bayern Munich, from which he moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2009, where he shone brightly and became one of the best defenders in the world.

He then returned to Bayern Munich in 2016 for three seasons, then returned to Dortmund until his contract expired last summer, after which he moved to Roma on a free transfer.

Hummels has achieved many accomplishments, including winning the 2014 World Cup with the German national team, six Bundesliga titles, and finishing runner-up in the Champions League twice with Dortmund.
