Argentine legend Lionel Messi expressed his happiness at winning the 2024 Copa America title with his country, considering it a great pleasure for the older players – including himself – to achieve a new international title in their careers.
Messi played only 66 minutes of the final against Colombia before leaving the Hard Rock Stadium in tears due to a severe ankle injury, in a match that ended with Argentina winning 1-0 and being crowned Copa America champions for the second time in a row.
Messi spoke for the first time about the title on his Instagram account, saying: “I’m so happy that we achieved our goal and made Di Maria leave us with another cup.”
He added: “The old people, like him, or Nicolas Otamendi, or me, live it with a special passion with our other teammates who have already played in many championships and also add their experience, and with a group of young people who gave their all for every ball.”
He continued: “We are a team and also a family, we are really an amazing group, thank you to everyone who supported us, this national team has a lot of present and a lot will happen in the future too.”
He concluded: “I’m fine and I hope to be back on the pitch very soon to enjoy what I love doing again, I want to thank everyone for the messages.”
The duration of Messi’s absence from the pitch has not been determined, but he is expected to return to Inter Miami in the coming hours to explore his future in the MLS.
