The Serbian Football Federation announced that its national team may withdraw from participating in Euro 2024 due to hostile chants from fans of Albania and Croatia.
There is a long history of political crises between these countries, but UEFA prohibits any political gestures, slogans or chants in its competitions.
During the match between Albania and Croatia on Wednesday, there were chants against Serbia, sparking widespread anger there and leading to a threat to withdraw from the competition.
The Serbian Federation demanded that UEFA take strict measures regarding what happened, as well as expressing strong dissatisfaction with a journalist from Kosovo directing the Albanian eagle sign towards Serbian fans.
The Secretary General of the Serbian Federation confirmed that a “scandal” had occurred by all standards, and if the European Union did not impose sanctions on the other party, the Serbian national team would withdraw from the Euro 2024 competition.
Serbia opened its participation in Euro 2024 with a 1-0 defeat against England, and will meet Slovenia on Thursday in the second round of the group stage.
