The European Football Association (UEFA) commissioned referee François Letexier officiating the match between Spain and England in the Euro 2024 final at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
Although the first candidate for this task was the famous Polish referee, Szymon Marciniak, the choice ultimately fell on Letexier.
Perhaps the 35-year-old represents a good omen for Spain in the Euro, as he was the referee for the match between El Matador and Georgia in the round of 16, which “La Roja” won 4-1.
In general, this is the fourth match that Letexier will officiate in the Euro, after he officiated the matches of Denmark, Serbia, Korea, and Albania in the groups, and Spain and Georgia in the eighth final.
Letexier is considered one of the elite referees in Europe, and nothing is more evident than his being the referee who officiated in the European Super Cup between Manchester City and Seville last season. He was also the fourth referee in the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, as well as in the opening of Euro 2024 between Germany and Scotland.
There is no accurate information about the reason for Marciniak’s exclusion, despite it being previously confirmed that he was the closest, while England’s arrival to the final dashed the hopes of English referee Mike Oliver to be present in the most important international arena.
