The Football Association has officially announced the appointment of Lee Carsley as the interim manager of the England national team, succeeding Gareth Southgate.
Southgate resigned after more than eight years in charge of the Three Lions following their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
England is still searching for a permanent successor to Southgate, and the English have been linked with several managers, most notably Pep Guardiola.
According to an FA statement, Carsley will take charge of the team for the upcoming matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in March as part of the UEFA Nations League.
Carsley’s role may extend until March, as the statement indicated, given the FA’s uncertainty about Southgate’s permanent successor.
Carsley led the England Under-21 team to victory at the European Championships last year and has been with the FA for four years, working with both the Under-20 and Under-21 teams.
It is worth noting that this plan may suggest that Guardiola is likely to take over England, as his contract with Manchester City ends at the end of the new season, at which point he could take charge of the Three Lions.
