Borussia Dortmund appointed Niko Kovac as the new permanent coach of the yellow and black team, succeeding the dismissed coach Nuri Sahin.
Despite the huge support of the management for Sahin, they were forced to dismiss him after a series of consecutive defeats in all tournaments and the loss of most of the team’s players.
Dortmund U19 coach Mark Tolberg was appointed temporarily as coach of the first team, where he led them against Bremen (2-2) in the Bundesliga and then against Shakhtar (3-1) in the Champions League.
The Dortmund management wanted to sign Roger Schmidt or Erik ten Hag, but the two wanted to work starting next season and not immediately.
In the end, Dortmund settled on signing Kovacin, who signed a contract with the German team for a year and a half.
As a player, Kovac spent most of his career in Germany, wearing the shirts of Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg and Bayern Munich, and as a coach he also has extensive experience in the Bundesliga.
Kovac began his career in Germany as a coach with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the German Cup, then moved to coach Bayern Munich, where he won the league and cup titles, and his most recent experience was with Wolfsburg.
