Liverpool announced on Friday morning the departure of duo Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara at the end of their contracts with the club at the end of the current season.
Matip has been absent from Liverpool since last December due to a torn cruciate ligament, and Jurgen Klopp was leaning towards him continuing, but with the confirmation of the German’s departure, the Cameroonian defender also left.
As for Alcantara, his journey with the Reds was not the best as he suffered many injuries, and as he advanced in age, Liverpool’s management decided not to renew his contract.
“The injuries were a source of frustration for us and for him as well, but what I will remember is the level he was able to play when he was available,” Klopp said about the Spanish midfielder.
Matip played 201 matches with Liverpool since joining in 2016, and was a key partner in achieving the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA and Carabao Cups, as well as the Club World Cup.
As for Alcantara, who only participated in 5 minutes this season, he played 98 matches since joining from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020.
