Officially…the Argentine legend announces his international retirement

Angel Di Maria brought down the curtain on his international career with the Argentina national team after the Silver Country won the 2024 Copa America title at the expense of Colombia in the final held at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Benfica star participated in 117 minutes of the Colombia match and wore the armband for most of it after Lionel Messi left injured in the 66th minute.

With Nicolas Otamendi replacing him, the end of Di Maria’s career with “Tango” came after 16 years of success.

The 36-year-old spoke to the media after the match, saying, “It was one of my dreams to retire internationally in a way like this. Argentina is my country and my love. Thank you all.”

Di Maria’s career with the first Argentine national team began in 2008, and extended to 114 international matches, during which he scored 31 goals and assisted 32 others.

There is no doubt that the former Real Madrid star is one of the most important legends of Argentina, as he scored the winning goal in the 2021 Copa America, scored a goal in the 2022 World Cup final, and also contributed greatly to his country’s victory in the Vinalesma and finally the 2024 Copa America.
