It seems that fate intervened to save Real Madrid from the trap of signing Lenny Yoro. During his medical examination with Manchester United, it was discovered that he was prone to injuries, which was confirmed after only two friendly matches with the Red Devils.
Real Madrid had identified the 18-year-old as their top target to bolster their defense this summer, but Lille’s excessive financial demands and Manchester United’s intervention sealed the deal in favor of the English club.
According to The Athletic, Yoro’s medical examination with United revealed that he had a metatarsal injury that could worsen at any time, and it was evident that the player was not in peak physical condition and could get injured frequently.
Despite this, United did not seem too concerned and went ahead with the signing. The shock came when Yoro injured his metatarsal again and had to undergo surgery, ruling him out for at least three months.
The strange thing is that Erik ten Hag was aware of Yoro’s medical condition and still played him, and even went on to sign Matthijs de Ligt for the defense because he realizes that the French defender gets injured often and cannot be relied upon consistently.
It is worth noting that despite all these circumstances, United paid more than €50 million to sign Yoro, while Real Madrid were only willing to pay a maximum of €30 million.
