The newspaper “AS” revealed that voices within Real Madrid are hesitant about renewing Luka Modric’s contract for another year, given his age and physical condition.
Despite Carlo Ancelotti’s confirmation that Modric’s physical condition is more than excellent, there are many doubts within the Santiago Bernabeu about the feasibility of keeping the Croatian for another year.
According to the report, the royal club wants to see how capable Modric is of playing two consecutive matches for 90 minutes, before approving his request to extend his contract for an additional season.
Ancelotti has always tried to keep the 39-year-old’s physical condition good, by starting him in one match and then as a substitute in another, but he will be required to change that to determine the player’s strength and make the final decision regarding his fate.
Real Madrid also want to ensure that if Modric continues next year, he can be counted on, especially since Eduardo Camavinga or Aurelien Tchouameni could leave, and the priority is still to sign a defender and two full-backs, so renewing the Croatian could be beneficial, depending on his condition.
It is worth noting that Modric, during the 42 matches he played with the royal team this season in all competitions, scored 4 goals, while providing 7 assists
