FIFA announced the 2024 Club Intercontinental Cup system.
The so-called “Intercontinental Cup” tournament was created to replace the Club World Cup, which is scheduled to be held once every 4 years with the participation of 32 clubs.
The new Confederations Cup competition will include the participation of the champions of the six continents who previously participated in the Club World Cup in its old system.
According to the announcement, each stage of the 2024 Club Intercontinental Cup will have an independent coronation.
Al Ain, the Asian champion, will play Auckland City, the Oceania champion, at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, with the winner qualifying to face Al Ahly of Egypt in what is known as the “Africa – Asia – Oceania Cup”, scheduled to be held on October 29 in Cairo.
On December 11, the North American champions, Pachuca of Mexico, will play the Copa Libertadores (South America) champions in what will be called the “Derby of the Americas”.
On December 14, a match called the “Challenge Cup” will be played between the winner of the Derby of the Americas and the winner of the Africa-Asia-Oceania Cup.
The winner of the Challenge Cup will meet Real Madrid on December 18 in what is called the “Intercontinental Cup”, which can be viewed as the final match, with the winner receiving $5 million.
Thus, the opportunity is available for Al Ain, Al Ahly and Auckland to achieve three world titles in one year, as well as for the South American champions and Pachuca to achieve two titles, in the event that any of them succeed in reaching the final and defeating Real Madrid.
