The widespread news that Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti intends to play Thibaut Courtois in the Champions League final caused great anger among goalkeeper Andrey Lunin.
According to Defensa Central, Lunin feels disrespected by the idea of sitting on the bench against Borussia Dortmund after everything he has done throughout the current season.
According to one of those close to the Ukrainian goalkeeper, Lunin is now conditioning his continuation at Real Madrid and renewing his contract beyond 2025 on the decisive decision regarding who will participate in the Champions League final.
The negotiations between the two parties have been going well recently, but talk about Courtois participating in the final, while he has only played two or a maximum of four matches this season, will change the course of things.
It will be a message to Lunin that, no matter how brilliant he is next season and in the coming years in general, he will not leave the bench in favor of the Belgian goalkeeper.
Ultimately, if the two parties fail to agree, Real Madrid will be open to selling Lunin to make some money for his successor next summer instead of him leaving for free in the summer of 2025.
Indeed, the 24-year-old finds himself the subject of interest from many major clubs around the world, most notably Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United.
