Real Madrid player Rodrigo revealed that he was close to joining Liverpool in 2017, before he changed his mind and decided to stay in Brazil.
Rodrigo’s talent emerged with Santos and he became a target for many clubs, even if he was seventeen years old, and Liverpool tried by all means to bring the player to Anfield.
The Brazilian said in an interview with the Guardian newspaper, “I was going to join Liverpool in 2017. We agreed on everything and the deal would have been done for only 3 million euros.”
He also added, “Everything collapsed because I said no at the last minute.”
As for the reason for his refusal to join Liverpool, he replied, “I wanted to continue with Santos and make history there, complete my studies, and then leave, even if Liverpool’s offer was special at the time.”
Indeed, Rodrigo continued at Santos until Real Madrid succeeded in signing him for 45 million euros in the summer of 2019.
The 23-year-old quickly succeeded in presenting himself as one of Real Madrid’s most important stars, as from then until now he has played 207 matches with the Spanish club, during which he scored 52 goals and assisted 40 others.
