Portugal coach, Roberto Martinez, strongly defended Cristiano Ronaldo against the criticism he faced from the media after the Czech Republic’s first match in Euro 2024.
Ronaldo made 3 shots against the Czechs, but did not succeed in scoring in the match, which ended with Portugal winning 2-1.
Martinez was asked about whether Ronaldo deserved to play a full match, and he responded and shocked the critics by saying, “Do you know how many minutes Ronaldo played with Al-Nassr this season?”
He also added, “Ronaldo is here because he deserves it. He gave a great performance last season, and you can look at what he did over the past editions of the Euro as well.”
He continued, “He shot three times towards the goal, more than any other player in the entire tournament in the first round. He is a fighting striker who works hard and is very important for us in the penalty area.”
He concluded, “It is really important to understand what Ronaldo offers. He brings us experience to the field, creates scoring opportunities and opens spaces.”
It remains to be noted that the 39-year-old played 45 matches with Al-Nassr in all tournaments last season, during which he scored 44 goals and assisted 13 others.
