Marca newspaper continued its attack on the Ballon d’Or officials, this time because of Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from the Gerd Muller Award for the best striker in the world 2024.
The Gerd Muller Award is usually given to the world’s top scorers, and in the 2014 edition it was won by the duo Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, who each scored 52 goals.
Marca wondered why the title was not given to Cristiano Ronaldo, considering that the football legend scored 57 goals in all competitions this season, whether with Al-Nassr Saudi Arabia or with the Portuguese national team.
In general, the justification provided by France Football for the matter is that Ronaldo is outside the five major leagues in Europe, and therefore he is not counted with the rest of the stars.
Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are absent from all Ballon d’Or awards for the first time in 21 years.
It is worth noting that criticism has not stopped following France Football magazine after Rodri was crowned the best player in the world instead of Vinicius Junior, despite the apparent clear superiority of the Brazilian star.
