Cristiano Ronaldo believes that winning the Euro 2016 title with Portugal is equivalent to winning the World Cup, so the World Cup is not the motivation for him to continue in football.
The statements of the Saudi Al-Nassr star came after scoring a goal in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia in the European Nations League.
This goal was Ronaldo’s 900th in his career with clubs and national teams, so he celebrated it while crying at the Da Luz Stadium in the capital Lisbon.
After the match, Ronaldo answered the newspapers’ questions about the World Cup, saying, “Portugal’s winning the Euro is equivalent to winning the World Cup.”
He also added, “I have already won two championships that I wanted to achieve with Portugal (the Euro and the European Nations League).”
He continued, “The idea of the World Cup does not motivate me, what motivates me is enjoying football, and the records will come naturally.”
“It seems like scoring 900 goals is very difficult, but only I know how hard I work every day to achieve it,” he added.
“It is a unique achievement in my career. As I said before, I do not seek records, they are what chase me.”
Many analysts went on to say that Ronaldo’s statement that the Euro is equivalent to the World Cup is to confirm that Lionel Messi is not superior to him in winning the 2022 World Cup.
Messi is numerically superior to Ronaldo in achievements with his country, as he won the 2008 Olympics gold, the Copa America twice, and the 2022 World Cup.
