Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy refused to wear the rainbow badge in support of gay rights during his team’s match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The English Premier League has dedicated round 13 to solidarity with the gay equality movement, and has imposed on clubs to wear the rainbow badge by their captains.
However, Sam Morsy refused to wear it and appeared wearing the usual captain’s badge for Ipswich Town.
For the first time, the Egyptian player commented on the matter in statements to YallaKora website, saying, “My not wearing the gay support badge is a personal decision, and the club has not spoken to me about this matter.”
The 32-year-old may be subject to sanctions from the Premier League because of his decision, similar to what happened to many players in France when they refused to wear the gay support shirt.
In general, this is not the first time that Sam Morsy has taken a position in line with his faith and origins, as he does not stop supporting Palestine on every occasion.
It is noteworthy that Sam played 12 matches this season with Ipswich Town in the Premier League, during which he scored one goal and made another. Despite his brilliance in the last year, coach Hossam Hassan refuses to return him to participate with the Egyptian national team.
