Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, the Saudi Sports Minister, denied reports over the past year about negotiations between the Saudi League and Mohamed Salah to attract him.
The Egyptian international just renewed his contract with Liverpool until the summer of 2027 after rumors linked him to a move to Al-Hilal with a financial offer that was said to be astronomical by any standard.
The Saudi Minister responded to these rumors by saying, “Mohamed Salah is a global star, an Arab and Muslim icon, and he fits the identity of the Saudi League.”
He added, “Renewing his contract with Liverpool was his personal decision, but linking his name to the Saudi League has been around for a long time. There were no negotiations, but it’s good to have his name associated with our tournament.”
He added, “Currently, any player who signs a new contract is told beforehand that he’s on his way to Saudi Arabia, and in fact, 90% of this news is untrue.”
He concluded, “Our current strategy is to sign young players. Look at most of the recent Saudi League deals. We want to develop the league and make it more competitive.”
It’s worth noting that the Saudi minister previously confirmed negotiations in 2023 for Salah to move to Al-Ittihad. His current discussion specifically addresses the rumors of renewed negotiations in recent months, but for a move to Al-Hilal.
