Simeone blames Courtois for derby incidents

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes Thibaut Courtois is at fault for the derby incident against Real Madrid.

The Atletico-Real match was stopped for about half an hour after fans at the Wanda Metropolitano threw lighters and projectiles at Courtois.

A clip later showed Courtois celebrating Eder Militao’s goal in front of the Atletico fans, which Simeone considered wrong and the cause of the whole incident.

Simeone said after the match: “You can celebrate the goal however you want but not by provoking the fans or making gestures.”

He added: “This is no excuse for what the fans did, but there is no excuse for what Courtois did either.”

He concluded: “The club should not allow this to happen, the person who threw the projectiles should not come to the stadium, and those who provoked the fans should be punished.”

Courtois had played for Atletico Madrid for years on loan from Chelsea, before moving to Real Madrid in 2018.

The Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid match ended after it was resumed with a positive draw between the two teams with a goal for each.
