Spanish Referees Committee Denies “Refereeing Scandal” in Barcelona-Sociedad Match

The Spanish Referees Committee confirmed that the decision to cancel Robert Lewandowski’s goal in the Barcelona-Real Sociedad match was 100% correct.

TV replays showed that Lewandowski was not ahead of the Sociedad defender, and multiple explanations went to the automatic offside technology that mistakenly confused him with the defender.

Barcelona lost 1-0 in the end, which made the management and players strongly blame the video technology, considering that Barca’s lead with this goal would have turned the balance of the match.

According to the newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”, the Spanish Referees Committee reviewed the moment of offside from 10 cameras that covered all angles, and what it concluded was that the offside decision was correct.

The committee confirmed that there was no confusion between Lewandowski’s foot and the Sociedad defender, and it became clear that the Polish player was actually ahead with the “tip of the shoe”.

The committee also explained the accuracy of the decision by saying that the technology used can identify precise offside situations and track the tips of the shoes, as the Hawk-Eye system captures 29 points on the player’s body up to 50 times per second to accurately determine his location.

This decision will remain controversial for a long time, especially since the Barcelona administration refuses to acknowledge the truth of what was said by the committee, especially in the presence of a television replay that confirmed that Lewandowski’s shoe did not pass over the Sociedad defender’s shoe.
