Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, considered that his club’s failure to sign Nico Williams in the summer Mercato came for “sporting reasons”.
Throughout the Mercato, Barca intensified its attempts to sign Williams, but the player eventually announced that he would continue for at least another year with his current club, Athletic Bilbao.
In an interview with Barcelona TV, Deco answered the reason for not signing the Spanish international, “We have Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, and Lamine Yamal, in addition to Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo”.
He also added, “Olmo gives us many options and we can also rely on him in the winger position instead of signing another player”.
He concluded, “I cannot say that we did not talk to the club or the player (Williams), but in the end we had priorities that made us not sign another winger”.
It is noteworthy that Barcelona can try to sign Williams next summer for only 60 million euros, which is the value of the penalty clause in the 22-year-old’s contract with Bilbao.
