Bayern Munich suffered a major blow after it was confirmed that Hiroki Ito, a central defender who can play at left-back, will be out of action for the rest of the season due to injury.
The Japanese international came on as a substitute in Bayern’s 3-2 win over St. Pauli on Saturday, but left the field with a new injury.
According to medical reports, Ito’s suffered a broken metatarsal and will be out for at least three months.
This is the second time Ito’o has suffered the same injury since joining Bayern at the beginning of last summer. Due to the first injury, he was sidelined until the beginning of this year.
This injury represents a major blow to Bayern, who have already lost left-back Alphonso Davies to a cruciate ligament injury, and Dayot Upamecano, whose return to action this season is doubtful.
Bayern Munich now has only Kim Min-jae and Eric Dier at center back, with Raphael Guerreiro as their only other option at left-back.
Bayern will face Inter in the Champions League quarter-finals and currently leads the Bundesliga standings by six points over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen.
