Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has called for the 2030 World Cup to be withdrawn from Spain if racism in stadiums continues.
Spain is set to share the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Morocco, with the final to be held at the historic Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
Vinicius has been the victim of racism in Spain’s stadiums over the past two years in a way that has never happened before, and because of him, laws against racism in stadiums have been updated and more than one defendant has been punished with imprisonment and fines.
In statements to Marca, the Brazilian international said, “If racism does not end in Spain before 2030, the World Cup must be moved to another place.”
He added, “We have enough time to change until 2030. Spain must realize the seriousness of insulting someone because of the color of their skin. I hope things change there soon.”
“If things don’t improve, the World Cup should be moved because if a player doesn’t feel comfortable and safe playing in a country where they can suffer from racism, it becomes very complicated,” he continued. “I love Real Madrid and my family and I love living in Spain but we hope things improve, it has already happened, but it can improve a lot more.”
