Younis Mahmoud comments on Saudi Arabia’s farewell to the 26th Gulf Cup

The Vice President of the Iraqi Football Association and one of the most important legends of Mesopotamia, Younis Mahmoud, commented on the Saudi national team’s farewell to the 2024 Gulf Cup against Oman.

Younis Mahmoud had sparked a great deal of controversy after what was considered a belittling of Saudi Arabia at the beginning of the tournament when he laughed when asked if the “Green” had gone to Kuwait to win the title.

After that, Iraq met Saudi Arabia in the group stage, and the match ended with the latter winning 3-1, then the Green players poured fiery statements against Younis Mahmoud.

The Saudi national team qualified for the semi-finals of the 26th Gulf Cup and clashed with Oman, but Herve Renard’s battalion failed to advance to the final after losing 2-1.

Younis Mahmoud wrote a brief comment on Saudi Arabia’s farewell to the tournament on his account on the X platform, “Hard luck to the Saudi national team and better luck in the upcoming tournaments.”

Many saw the tweet as confirmation from the legend that his previous statements about Saudi Arabia were correct despite what happened in the group stage.

It is worth noting that Younis Mahmoud refused to apologize for his statements, but at the same time he held himself responsible for Iraq’s early farewell to the 26th Gulf Cup due to the pressures he imposed on the players.
