The Iraqi football legend and Vice President of the Football Association, Younis Mahmoud, has become the talk of social media in recent hours due to what was seen as his mockery of the Saudi national team.
Younis Mahmoud appeared in a media interview with the “Our League is Different” program and was asked if he saw the Saudi national team as a competitor to Iraq for the 2024 Gulf Cup, which is currently being held in Kuwait.
The Iraqi legend responded with a sarcastic laugh and said, “Is Saudi Arabia coming to win the title?” Which sparked a wave of attacks against him and many considered it to belittle the Green Falcons.
Younis Mahmoud continued his speech by saying, “The Bahraini brothers also say that they are coming to win the title.”
He concluded, “All the Iraqi, Saudi, Bahraini, Qatari and Kuwaiti teams want to win the title and this is natural, and this is the beauty of the Gulf Cup, and what is more beautiful than winning the title is the Gulf gathering.”
The Saudi national team had opened its journey in the Gulf Cup with a 3-2 defeat to Bahrain, while Iraq won against Yemen 1-0 in the same group.
Saudi Arabia has recently suffered a significant decline in results, which led to the dismissal of Roberto Mancini two months ago and the appointment of Herve Renard as his replacement, but things have not improved much so far.
