Manchester United’s match against Brighton in the opening round of the Premier League witnessed the most bizarre offside of 2024.
With the score tied at 1-1, Joshua Zirkzee appeared to have scored Manchester United’s second goal in the final 15 minutes of the game. However, upon closer inspection by VAR, it was revealed that the Dutch international was in an offside position.
The play started with a brilliant pass from Amad Diallo to Bruno Fernandes, who crossed the ball into the box for Alejandro Garnacho, who was unmarked in front of goal. The Argentine international struck the ball towards the open net, but inexplicably, it hit Zirkzee’s knee and went into the goal.
VAR intervened, and it became clear that the Dutch international was marginally offside with just the tip of his boot when Garnacho struck the ball. As a result, the goal was disallowed.
It remains a mystery whether Garnacho intentionally aimed for Zirkzee or if the former Bologna player subconsciously extended his leg to make contact with the ball.
